Four Persons Seriously Injured in Herders/ Farmers Clash in Niger Community
By YM Bina
Pandemonium in Pampo Village in the Kataeregi District of Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State witnessed attack by an alleged young Fulani herder that left three farmers seriously injured.
It was gathered that the incident reportedly occurred when some herders allegedly drove their cattle into a soyabean farm belonging to one of the victims who attempted to chase the animals away to prevent them from destroying his crops.
Sources hinted that situation, however, reportedly turned violent when one of the herders allegedly attacked the farmer with a dagger after an argument ensued over the incident.
The attack reportedly attracted the attention of other farmers working nearby, who rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help. However, the assailant allegedly turned on two of the farmers who attempted to intervene, inflicting serious injuries on them before fleeing the area.
The three injured farmers were subsequently taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment just as one of the victim had a deep cut around the ear and neck region, resulting in severe bleeding and requiring urgent medical attention.
This particular incident has again drawn attention to the recurring farmer-herder conflicts in parts of Niger State and other rural communities, where disputes over grazing activities and destruction of crops often resulted to violent in several communities of the state.
Community leaders in the area have called for stronger conflict-resolution mechanisms, improved security presence and sustained dialogue between farmers and herders to promote peaceful coexistence in the area
They also appealed to the Niger State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable farming communities, particularly during the peak farming season when tensions over access to farmland and grazing routes are often heightened.
