By YM Bina
The Niger state governor Mohammed Umar Bago has been accused of bastardizing the civil service, following his consistently extensions of some civil servants tenure who were due for retirement in the state.
Some concern Nigerlites and civil servants in which some of them are retirees described the attitude of the governor as most unfortunate as guiding rules and regulations of the service are being deliberately violated unabated. Adding that continuous extension of six months for specific individuals is uncalled for.
It was reliably gathered that no fewer than six civil servants due for retirement have been given extension not because they are special professionals that are lacking in the system but for selfishness, unpatriotic, and favouritism purposes while halting others of their normal promotions as required in the civil service in the state.
Reports however revealed that some of this culprit civil servants who are at Permanent Secretary levels include: Hajiya Hauwa Isah Wali Permanent Secretary government house, Barrister Mairo Mohammed Mann Permanent Secretary Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Mr John Bake Permanent Secretary Political and General Services SSGs office, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs.
Most unfortunate of the situation is that the Niger State Head Of Service HOS, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq who is supposed to be the father of all the civil servants to ensure the right thing is seen to be done is allegedly culprit as a beneficiary.
Consequently, this has been extended to some accountants who have shown to be good boys in the system due for retirement have their six months extension also, they includes that of the SSG’s office and N-SUBEB among others who are using their alleged proceeds for APC campaign logistics, hindering civil servants progression in Niger state.
This has became necessary to call for its reversal without delay in order to give their subordinates opportunities to get to their rightful levels before their retirements in the state, regretted the arbitrary misrule, misguided and maladministration ongoing in the Niger state civil service called for caution.
The concern citizens of the state have appealed to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to as a matter of urgency reversed the trends in the Niger state civil service to ensure fairness, justice and stability in the system.
Responding, the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC chairman Comrade Abdulkareem Idrees Lafene said that the governor has the constitutional powers to give waivers to any civil servant for a particular position especially as permanent secretary is considered to be a political status.
Lafene called for official complaints through their affiliate unions to enable the organized labour follow up to ensure justice and fairness, while assuring of confidentiality, hence the need to give others opportunity to thrive in their carriers.
The union leader who said he is not aware of that of the Head of Service extension, charged governor Mohammed Umar Bago to organise a retreat for the civil servants to fill in the vacancies in the system while he raises concern if the numbers of approved extension is in large numbers.
