The Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo has declined to grant a perpetual injunction that sought to restrain the Chief Judge of the state, Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, from acting on impeachment requests by the state assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Ordu.

The development is a relief for lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, who have been at odds with the Fubara administration.

The Media Aide to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike, Lere Olayinka, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the presiding judge ruled that the court could not grant the requested injunction because the matter is currently before the Court of Appeal.

“The presiding judge noted that the matter is already before the Court of Appeal and subsequently adjourned the case indefinitely, pending the determination of the appeal,” Olayinka said.

This ruling means that the High Court will take no further action on the matter until the appellate court delivers its judgment on the legal questions surrounding the impeachment process.

Naija News recalls that Justice Amadi had previously declined to constitute a seven-member panel to act on the Rivers Assembly’s impeachment notice, citing existing court orders.

The Rivers Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had served Governor Fubara with the impeachment notice and confirmed that the Chief Judge received it.

The latest adjournment underscores the judiciary’s caution in handling politically sensitive matters. The outcome of the appeal will determine whether the impeachment process can proceed or will be stalled further.
