Everton manager David Moyes has admitted the club has been dealt a major setback after winger Jack Grealish was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot.

The 30-year-old, on a season-long loan from Manchester City, has been one of Everton’s standout players this campaign, featuring 22 times in all competitions. He has chipped in with two goals and six assists, playing a key role in the club’s push into the top half of the table.

“It’s a big blow because he’s been hugely important to us since the start of the season,” Moyes said. “It’s not for me to give the timescales, we’ve not got it from the doctors yet.”

The news comes just days after Grealish completed the full 90 minutes in Everton’s 1-0 Premier League victory over his former club, Aston Villa, on Sunday. Everton, currently 10th in the Premier League standings, are preparing to host Leeds United on Monday.

Moyes confirmed that Everton are in “close contact” with City as discussions continue over whether the winger will remain at Goodison Park during his recovery period.

When asked if the injury could affect any plans to make the move permanent in the summer, the Everton boss was keen to downplay the speculation.

“We’re not thinking about it at the moment,” he said. “We’re only thinking about Jack. We’re upset and disappointed for him that he’s got an injury.”

Before the setback, Grealish’s revival on Merseyside had sparked talk of a possible return to the England squad, with hopes of forcing his way into contention for the World Cup later this year. His last international appearance came under caretaker boss Lee Carsley in October 2024, representing England.

After his high-profile move from Villa in 2021, Grealish enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at City, winning three league titles, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup.

However, his role diminished last season, with limited league starts and an omission from the squad for the Club World Cup in the United States.
