Bayern Munich’s remarkable 27-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga was brought to a sudden end on Saturday after relegation-threatened Augsburg pulled off a stunning comeback win at the Allianz Arena.

The champions appeared to be cruising when Japanese defender Hiroki Ito nodded Bayern Munich into the lead midway through the first half. Rising highest to meet a corner from Michael Olise in the 23rd minute, Ito’s header marked Olise’s league-leading 14th assist of the season.

Yet beneath the surface, Vincent Kompany’s side looked uncharacteristically fragile. Augsburg nearly levelled just before the break when Robin Fellhauer unleashed a fierce effort that crashed against the woodwork.

That warning went unheeded after the break. Bayern were fortunate again when Elvis Rexhbecaj blazed over with the goal at his mercy, but Augsburg soon found their reward. With 15 minutes remaining, Arthur Chaves outmuscled Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to a corner and headed into an unguarded net to draw the visitors level.

Urbig, handed a rare start as Manuel Neuer was rested among four changes by Kompany, endured an uncomfortable afternoon and struggled to command his area.

The decisive moment arrived nine minutes from time. Having lost all eight league matches this season when they conceded first, Augsburg tore up that script as Han-Noah Massengo capped a flowing team move with a clinical finish to complete the turnaround and silence the home crowd.

Bayern threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but it was not to be. Olise, who now boasts four goals and seven assists in his last five league appearances, rattled the crossbar with a long-range strike with the final kick of the game.

Harry Kane, unusually subdued, was unable to inspire the hosts to the multiple-goal display that has defined much of their campaign.

Despite the shock defeat, Bayern remain firmly in control of the title race, sitting 11 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, albeit having played a game more.

As for Augsburg, the win helped them to climb to 13th in the table and now sit four points above the relegation play-off spot.
