The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the attempted assassination of the Paramount Ruler of Ancient Bangha Kingdom, Khana Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, King Suanu Baridam.

The monarch was reportedly shot on Sunday along Tekar Sogho Road in Khana while travelling to Port Harcourt.

The incident, which is the second attempt on the life of the traditional ruler, has sparked anxiety among leaders of the Ogoni ethnic nationality in the state.

It was gathered that the monarch was rushed to an undisclosed health facility after sustaining gunshot injuries.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the attackers emerged from the bush and opened fire on the monarch’s vehicle.

“On January 25, 2026, about 5:30p.m., His Royal Majesty, King T. Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha community, reported at the Police Station that while returning from Okwale community where he attended a meeting, his vehicle came under attack by unknown gunmen,” she said.

According to the police, the attack occurred as the monarch’s convoy reached Tekar Sogho Road leading to the East–West Road.

“The hoodlums emerged from the bush and opened fire on his black Prado SUV. The gunshots shattered the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle,” Iringe-Koko said.

She added that the monarch sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The PPRO said police teams had been deployed to comb the area in search of the perpetrators.

She assured residents that the command would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.
