Nigerian footballers across Europe are bracing for decisive moments as the UEFA Champions League group phase reaches its conclusion tonight, January 28, with several clubs fighting to keep their continental hopes alive.

At the centre of attention is Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, whose side head into a daunting away fixture against Manchester City knowing that anything short of a disciplined performance could spell the end of their Champions League campaign this season.

The Turkish champions are hovering dangerously close to elimination and must avoid a heavy defeat if they are to reach the play-offs.

Galatasaray sit 17th on the standings with 10 points from seven matches, a position that falls short of the ambitions earlier voiced by Osimhen, who had challenged his side to rise to the occasion, insisting, “It’s time to make a statement in the most prestigious games.”

Osimhen has been one of the standout performers in this season’s competition, scoring six goals in five appearances, but Galatasaray’s fate remains uncertain.

Lookman Eyes Top-Eight Champions League Finish

Ademola Lookman and Atalanta still harbour hopes of finishing inside the top eight, although their margin for error has disappeared. The Italian side sit on 13 points with a +1 goal difference but were dealt a setback after last week’s 3-2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

Atalanta now travel to face Union Saint-Gilloise, knowing only a win will keep their top-eight ambitions intact. Their Belgian hosts are also battling for survival, and any slip-up would likely see Atalanta drop into the play-off places.

Lookman, who returned from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco in fine form, has featured in six Champions League matches this season, contributing one goal and two assists.

Tella and Leverkusen Still in the Hunt

Nathan Tella and Bayer Leverkusen are also walking a tightrope. The German champions are 20th with nine points and remain in contention for a play-off spot. However, their poor goal difference means a draw against Villarreal may not be enough to guarantee qualification.

Onyedika, Onyemaechi and Narrow Margins

Raphael Onyedika and Club Brugge face a tougher task. Sitting 27th with seven points, the Belgian side must beat Marseille to have any chance of finishing inside the top 24. Even then, their qualification hopes depend on results elsewhere. Onyedika has been a consistent presence, registering one goal and one assist in the competition so far.

Bruno Onyemaechi could yet play a role for Olympiacos despite limited minutes this season. The Greek side occupy the final qualifying spot with eight points and need at least a draw away at Ajax, while also keeping an eye on goal difference and chasing teams behind them.

Ilenikhena Chasing History and Progress

At Monaco, teenage forward George Ilenikhena faces his own pivotal night. The French side sit 21st with nine points, and like Bayer Leverkusen, their weak goal difference means they must do more than draw at home against Juventus to be certain of qualification.

Ilenikhena recently etched his name into the history books by surpassing Kanu Nwankwo as the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances. The 19-year-old achieved the feat at 19 years and 157 days after coming on for 18 minutes in Monaco’s 6-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

Kanu’s previous record had stood since April 17, 1996, when the former Arsenal star reached the milestone at 19 years and 260 days.
