IBBU Lapai ASUU Branch Declares Indefinite Strike With Immediate Effect
By YM Bina
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai Branch of Niger State has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike with immediate effect.
The decision was announced at an emergency congress and press conference held at the university premises in Lapai.
Chairman of ASUU IBBUL, Comrade Galadima A. Bala, said the action followed what the union described as the continued non-implementation of critical components of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement by the Niger State Government.
He said despite several engagements, appeals and avenues of dialogue, the issues remain unresolved, insisting that agreements reached with the participation of state governments and public universities must be honoured and implemented in full.
The union noted that about sixteen state universities have already implemented the agreement, including universities in Bauchi, Gombe, Benue, Yobe, Osun, Ekiti and Kano States, while Nasarawa State University has also commenced implementation.
ASUU IBBUL warned that Niger State risks falling behind, saying the neglect of the education sector could have serious security and developmental consequences.
The union also expressed concern over what it described as the massive exodus of academic staff, citing reports that Kaduna State University has lost over two hundred lecturers as a result of refusal to implement the agreement.
ASUU therefore called on the Niger State Government to urgently address the issues and restore industrial harmony at IBB University.
The union, however, said it remains open to genuine and meaningful dialogue, stressing that the industrial action would be suspended once there is demonstrable commitment and concrete action towards implementing the agreement.
It also appealed to its members to remain calm, disciplined and law-abiding throughout the struggle, while expressing regret over the inconvenience the strike may cause students, parents and other stakeholders.
