Kebbi State Gov’t Declares War Against Cyber Crime Syndicate in the State

The Kebbi State Government has expressed grave concern over the activities of an emerging cybercrime syndicate popularly known as “Yan Vocal,” operating within Argungu Local Government Area, and has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting residents from all forms of cyber-enabled crimes.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Kebbi State Governor’s Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi Ahmed Idris in Birinin Kebbi.

He stated that credible intelligence has revealed that the criminal network, made up largely of young persons between the ages of 19 and 24, specializes in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and using blackmail, threats, and other fraudulent schemes to extort money from unsuspecting victims.

According to him, the syndicate allegedly targets Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other social media platforms, where it sends explicit content or manipulates video calls and photographs to intimidate victims into making financial payments. Investigations further indicate that the group deliberately targets high-profile individuals, including political office holders, traditional and religious leaders, business owners, and other prominent personalities across Nigeria and neighbouring countries, including Niger, Ghana, and the Republic of Benin.

Preliminary investigations have identified nineteen suspected members of the syndicate. Security agencies have also uncovered their operational patterns, meeting locations, and methods of receiving illicit proceeds through digital financial platforms.

The Kebbi State Government wishes to assure the public that security agencies are actively working to dismantle the criminal network and bring all those involved to justice. No effort will be spared in ensuring that cybercriminals find no safe haven anywhere within the state.

The Government also urges residents to exercise caution while using social media by safeguarding their personal information, avoiding interactions with suspicious online accounts, and reporting any attempted cyber extortion or online blackmail to the appropriate security agencies without delay.

Cybercrime is not a victimless offence. Beyond financial losses, it inflicts emotional and psychological trauma, destroys reputations, erodes public confidence, and poses a growing threat to national security. Combating this menace requires collective vigilance and sustained public awareness.

Accordingly, the Kebbi State Government will continue to strengthen collaboration among security agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications providers, and community stakeholders while intensifying public enlightenment campaigns aimed at preventing cybercrime and promoting responsible digital behaviour.

The Government reiterates its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that Kebbi State remains a safe and secure environment for residents, businesses, and legitimate digital activities.
