WPF: Niger Gov’t Reaffirms Determination to Responsible Journalism, Democratic Values, Peace

The Niger State Government joins the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, with a renewed call for the protection of press freedom, responsible journalism, and constructive media engagement in advancing peace, development, and national security.

In a statement issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nuhu Nana said the Government sees the media as a critical pillar in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency, and fostering peaceful coexistence within society.

This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” highlights the strategic role of independent journalism in promoting accountability, protecting human rights, supporting economic recovery, and sustaining peaceful societies across the world.

The Commissioner noted that the theme is timely, particularly at a period when the global media landscape continues to face increasing challenges ranging from misinformation and digital manipulation to threats against journalists and shrinking civic spaces.

The statement further acknowledged the sacrifices of media professionals who continue to serve society under difficult conditions, while also paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty across the world.

The Niger State Government reaffirmed its commitment under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to sustaining an enabling environment for media practice, constructive public communication, and citizens’ engagement in governance.

The Commissioner urged media practitioners in the State and across Nigeria to continue to use their platforms to promote peace, unity, social harmony, and responsible public discourse, especially in an era where information dissemination significantly influences public perception and national stability.

He further called on citizens to support credible journalism and resist the spread of fake news, hate speech, and divisive narratives capable of undermining peace and development efforts.

“As we commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Niger State, we must collectively recognise that press freedom carries enormous responsibility.

The media must remain a force for truth, peace, development, and national cohesion,” the statement added.

World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate media independence globally, and honour journalists who have made sacrifices in pursuit of truth and public enlightenment.
